Challenge Madrid 2019 arrives with important news. The competition will take place on September 22th starting in Pantano de San Juan and will have a new route, much flatter with less climbing. Challenge Madrid also presents a half distance for 2019, in addition to the long distance, with finish line at the Puerta del Sol. It's a good opportunity to enjoy swimming in a reservoir in the Sierra Madrileña, a spectacular bike race and a matathon through the center of Madrid that ends in one of the most important and recognizable places in Spain.
The swimming segment will take place on the Pantano de San Juan (Pelayos de la Presa). The distance to be covered by the triathletes in the Pantano de San Juan will be 3.800 meters. In this place the T1 will be set up, place from where the bicycle race will come out.
The bike race will be 180 km and will go through the Sierra Oeste, where the mountainous terrain predominates, giving way to other lower areas through which the Alberche and Perales rivers flow. The variety of landscapes, as well as the relief and the vegetal species that can be observed, are very valuable since this region runs between 500 and 1500 meters of altitude.
The first part of the bicycle circuit runs between the last foothills of the Sierra del Guadarrama and the first elevations of the Sierra de Gredos, in the extreme southwest of the region. The predominant vegetation in this region are coniferous forests, whose most prominent species is the stone pine. On its slopes also grow oaks, cork oaks, junipers, melojos and chestnuts, forming a typical spot of the Mediterranean forest. The second part will go to Madrid passing through different towns until arriving at the Paseo de la Casa de Campo in Pozuelo de Alarcón where the T2 (transition place) will be located from where the Marathon race will start.
After leaving the bicycle in T2, they will cross the Casa de Campo towards the Palacio de Vargas heading to Madrid Rio where they will make a turn to run in the direction of Segovia Street and return to cross the Puente del Rey again making another turn towards Segovia Street before going up to the downtown area through the Cuesta de la Vega and that is where you will have to do the kilometers of the race on foot. The route in the center will be 6 laps that runs mainly through the Calle Mayor, the Catedral de la Almudena, the Palacio Real, the Calle Bailen, the Gran Vía de San Francisco el Grande. In its final, on the last lap, the foot race will enter the Puerta del Sol for its arrival at “Km 0”, where the finish line will be located.
